Overview

When AI search describes the wrong product version, save the exact answer and compare it with the current product record. Fix inconsistencies on your own pages, then contact any cited publisher that needs a factual correction. Recheck what appears; a source update does not guarantee every AI answer will change.

Make the error specific enough to investigate

Record the exact question, tool or mode, date, answer and cited URLs. Identify which statement is wrong and which current product record establishes the correction. A screenshot without the question or source may be difficult to reproduce or interpret.

Distinguish an old formula, a similarly named item, a different size and a wrong retailer listing. Those errors can require different actions. Do not use a general complaint such as ‘AI does not understand our brand’ when the problem can be described as one incorrect fact.

Illustrative error log, not an observed brand incident
FieldCompleted example
Observed statementThe answer assigns the previous ingredient list to the current cleanser.
Correct identityCurrent cleanser variant and its approved product record.
Cited sourceA dated article describing the previous version.
Owned-page checkThe current product page is accurate but does not clearly distinguish the versions.
Next actionAdd factual version context and request a source correction where appropriate.

Glossier: a real reference for formula and variant specificity

Glossier’s US Balm Dotcom page, checked on October 12, 2026, lists ingredients by flavor and includes original-formula wording. It is a useful example of why version details matter. We did not observe an AI error involving Glossier; the brand is included here for its product documentation.

For your product, a vague brand description may be insufficient when a shopper asks about an exact version. Distinguish a formula change from a flavor, size, package or regional variant. Identify which attributes differ and where the authoritative current information lives. A customer should not have to infer the version from a photograph of an old package or an undated review.

Publish only facts the responsible product owner can verify. If a question concerns ingredients or suitability, link to the current specific documentation and avoid converting marketing copy into an unsupported health claim. Where historical information remains useful, label its applicable date or version clearly. Accurate version context helps a person immediately, even if an external AI answer takes longer to change.

Example: an old size appears beside a new price

Consider a hypothetical product that changes from a 30 mL package to a 40 mL package while old retailer pages remain online. The brand sees an assistant combine the old size with the new price. This is an illustrative scenario, not a reported Glossier event. Capture the exact answer and its sources before making changes, because a later result may differ.

Check the current product page, visible size, variant data, feed and support answer. Correct any contradiction under the brand’s control, then identify whether the assistant cited an outdated third-party listing. Send that publisher the precise current fact and supporting record through its appropriate correction route. Keep a status for each surface instead of marking the whole incident resolved after changing one sentence.

Record what changed when you recheck. Your product page may now be correct while the assistant still shows the old size. Keep one clear current product page, with historical context where needed, and give someone responsibility for future updates. Publishing several similar correction articles can make the version history harder to follow.

How the work fits together

Fix the specific mismatch, then observe the answer

  1. Identify

Pinpoint the mismatched attribute and version.

  2. Correct

Repair authoritative records and dependent surfaces.

  3. Observe

Recheck external answers without promising timing.

A planning approach developed by Dahna from the example above.

Check the facts you control first

Compare the live product page, current catalog record, structured information, media descriptions and any accessible older material. Confirm that the same name is not being used ambiguously for different versions. Keep a clear source of truth inside the brand.

Correct genuine inconsistencies without erasing useful historical context. An old article can remain accurate about the product that existed at the time. Where confusion is likely, a dated explanation can distinguish the old and current versions without implying that a product change happened for reasons you cannot substantiate.

How the work fits together

Trace the answer back to a source

  1. AI answer

Save the exact statement and context.

  2. Cited page

Check whether it describes another version.

  3. Current facts

Compare with the approved product record.

  4. Correction

Update the appropriate owned source or request an external correction.

A factual investigation. Some answers have incomplete citations or cannot be reproduced exactly.

Request a correction that the publisher can verify

If a retailer, article or other external source is wrong, send a concise request naming the product, the disputed statement and a reliable current reference. Preserve the difference between requesting a factual correction and trying to control independent editorial opinion.

If there is no usable citation, correct the owned information and use any available feedback mechanism for the tool. Record what was submitted and when. Do not promise the brand that a publisher or AI provider will accept the request or update on a fixed schedule.

A correction request for the fictional cleanser could read: “Your article describes the previous cleanser formula, but the linked store page now sells the current version. The approved current ingredient list is on the product page linked below. Could you identify which version your article describes and update the link or factual statement where appropriate? We have included the exact sentence and a dated reference for comparison.” Supply the real URL, version and disputed sentence before sending it.

Keep the request narrow. If an older review accurately describes the product the reviewer tried, the useful correction may be a version label or a current-product link. Asking the publisher to replace an old opinion with new promotional language would not resolve the factual issue.

Explain which version the information describes

In the fictional cleanser example, the brand could add a factual note that identifies the current product and links to the current ingredient list. If an older page remains available, its context should clearly identify the earlier version. The wording must be approved against the product history.

For a real reformulation, coordinate any wider packaging, support and customer communications separately. Correcting search information is only one part of that work. The people responsible for product history and claims should approve the explanation.

  • Current identity and facts confirmed by the brand
  • The specific incorrect statement saved
  • Owned inconsistencies corrected
  • External requests supported by a reliable reference
  • Dates and remaining uncertainty recorded

Recheck the sources and the answer

Repeat the relevant question with the original context as closely as practical and record the new answer. Check the source pages as well as the generated response. If the result changes, describe the observation; one changed answer does not prove that all tools or shoppers now receive the correction.

Dahna can coordinate the product-information review and connect it to website, SEO and content work. The useful output is a documented correction path and a clearer source, with unresolved external behavior left visible.

How the work fits together

Keep correction and outcome separate

  1. Change shipped

The source now contains the approved information.

  2. Source checked

The current page and relevant records agree.

  3. Answer observed

A dated recheck records what the tool returns.

  4. Next action

Close the specific issue or document what remains unresolved.

An observed correction is not a guarantee of permanent accuracy across AI systems.

Keep a correction log

Prepare a product correction ledger with the wrong statement, exact current fact, applicable version and market, supporting source, changed surfaces and follow-up observations.

Use the downloadable planning sheet linked below to adapt the examples to your brand. Add the current product information, the person responsible for each task and the check that will show the work is complete. Keep unanswered questions visible for the project discussion.

About the sources

Glossier’s Balm Dotcom page was checked on October 12, 2026. It is a source for the brand’s published product and variant information, which can change. No AI-error incident involving Glossier or effect on search rankings was measured.
