Published guideHow much should we budget to test ads for our beauty brand?
Published 2025–2026 benchmarks put beauty on Meta at roughly a $12–$14 CPM (the highest CPM of any industry Lebesgue tracks), with median acquisition costs around $34–$38. Google search clicks for beauty and personal care average $4.62, just under the $5.42 all-industry average, at about $39 per lead. TikTok is the cheapest reach: a $5.28 beauty CPM versus a $13.26 platform median, and an $18.82 median cost per acquisition. These are planning references, not quotes: your costs move with objective, creative, offer, and season. Treat the first two to three months of spend as a testing budget that buys conversion evidence, not immediate profit.

Start with what remains from an order after discounts, product cost, fulfillment, expected returns and variable fees. That gives you a basis for deciding how much you can spend to win the order. The e.l.f. case below also shows why you should check which action a reported acquisition cost actually measures.
Separate media spend from creative, agency fees and measurement work. A campaign with a small media budget can be overwhelmed by fixed costs, while an inexpensive ad can be unprofitable on a low-margin product. Define the loss you can afford while learning, the period of observation and the evidence needed to continue. Do not justify today’s loss with repeat purchases that your store has not yet demonstrated.
A budget showing contribution per order, target acquisition cost, total test cost, downside limit and the specific decision the test should answer.
Service answerShould we start with Meta, Google or TikTok ads?
Choose the first channel around the buying situation. Google Search is worth investigating when people already describe the need in a search. Meta can be a useful starting hypothesis when the product needs a visual explanation in a feed. TikTok requires creative that works in its viewing context and a team that can keep learning from it. These are planning choices, not guarantees about the cheapest platform.
Compare the creative you can actually produce, the purchase destination and the money available for one meaningful test. A small brand does not need to open three paid channels at once. If the first test cannot answer a clear question, adding channels usually makes the result harder to interpret.
Choose one customer question and one platform; write down why the available creative and purchase path suit that choice.

Look at how people encounter your product. If they already search for a specific solution, review those searches and the competing pages. If the value only becomes clear after a demonstration, check whether your team can produce that explanation consistently.
Compare operational readiness as well as audience size. A TikTok Shop test needs usable listings and fulfillment; a search campaign needs relevant query coverage and an appropriate landing page; a social campaign needs creative people will understand. Start with the channel for which the product, team and purchase path are ready. Expanding into a second channel should answer a new question, not conceal an unresolved first test.
A channel comparison covering buyer intent, creative requirements, destination, operational owner, measurement and the smallest useful first test.
Published guideOur ads get clicks but few sales. Does the page deliver what the ad promised?
Write down what a shopper reasonably expects after seeing the ad, then inspect whether the destination identifies the same product, supports the same promise and offers the advertised next action. Repair the unsupported or missing part of that chain. Sometimes the page needs clearer evidence; sometimes the ad needs a narrower promise. Matching copy alone does not establish truth or prove a conversion lift.

Open the ad and its landing page side by side. A shopper should recognize the same product, variant and offer in both. If the ad features one shade or bundle, send people to that option or make it easy to select as soon as they arrive.
Walk through the journey on a phone with the ad in view. Confirm that the product, displayed price, bundle contents and availability agree. Place the answer to the ad’s main question near the purchase decision. A general homepage can force a motivated visitor to reconstruct the entire offer. Before changing the campaign, check whether the destination is asking the shopper to do unnecessary work.

Published guideOur ads bring sales but the business still loses money. Can we afford to spend more?
Start with the revenue a first order actually retains, subtract its variable costs, and reserve the contribution your business needs before assigning money to acquisition. That produces a planning ceiling, not a guaranteed achievable customer acquisition cost (CAC). Release media only within both that economic ceiling and an approved cash allowance, using conservative assumptions where returns, product mix or costs remain uncertain.

More revenue does not always leave more money in the business. Discounts, samples, commissions, fees and fulfillment can grow faster than sales. Start with your own order costs; the ad platform will not know all of them.
Build a simple order-level or cohort-level contribution view. Record net revenue after refunds, product cost, fulfillment, relevant creator commissions and media spend without counting the same expense twice. Keep fixed launch costs visible separately. A low-margin first order might still be acceptable under a deliberate acquisition plan, but that plan needs actual retention evidence and a cash limit rather than a hopeful lifetime-value estimate.
A reconciled contribution report explaining the bridge from gross sales to net revenue, variable costs, acquisition costs and remaining contribution.
Service answerWhy do paid ads feel harder to make profitable now?
Paid ads can feel less forgiving when attention costs more, the offer leaves little room for acquisition, or a small campaign has too few purchases to learn from. Meta reported a 12% year-over-year increase in average price per ad across its global Family of Apps in Q2 2026. That is a market signal, not a US beauty CPM benchmark or proof that every advertiser's costs rose by 12%.
The useful response is to diagnose your own constraint. Compare delivery costs, meaningful store visits, purchase completion and contribution after marketing. Automation still needs a clear product, useful creative and a page that keeps the ad's promise. Tracking limits and attribution differences can also make the reports harder to read; they are not all new problems.
Identify whether the next dollar is being lost in acquisition cost, the offer, the page or measurement before increasing the budget.

Find out where acquisition became more expensive. Did it cost more to reach people, did fewer people click, did fewer visitors buy, or did each order leave less margin? More than one can change at once. Give each metric a clear definition before comparing periods.
Compare a consistent period, market and customer group. Check changes in discounts, stock, creative, destination, attribution and repeat-customer mix before blaming the auction. If traffic quality is stable but checkout completion falls, improve the purchase path. If attention drops while the offer still converts qualified visitors, test a clearer creative explanation. Broad market pressure is context; the account needs its own diagnosis.

Decide what a successful first test would teach you, then check that shoppers can understand and buy the product. The e.l.f. case helps clarify the measurement question; Christian Holst’s research highlights product understanding. Both are worth addressing before paying for traffic.
Choose one offer, an explicit US audience hypothesis and a destination that can fulfill the promise. Test purchase tracking using a legitimate test workflow, inspect the full mobile experience and record the starting economics. Define what will make you pause, repair or continue. A modest, interpretable test is useful even when it rejects the original idea; a larger campaign with unclear events is difficult to learn from.
